Darkthrone, one of the most important bands of Norwegian and World Black Metal, released their 20th studio album on October 28. The band wasn't in the Black Metal line when they released "Soulside Journey" in 1991. But they became one of the biggest names in the genre after their second album, "A Blaze in the Northern Sky". So much so that if you thought Norwegian Black Metal, it is the first name that comes to mind. Many bands that were active when the band stepped into the metal scene are not active today, from this point of view, it is of course great that Darkthrone is still producing; but it's also true that the die hard fans of the band have suffered with each product, especially since the album "The Cult Is Alive".
Darkthrone continues to progress along the lines of "Old Star", "Eternal Hails...". First of all, I have to say that in this review, sometimes I criticize songs in a negative way, it does not mean that the songs are bad. The band has not produced an album like "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" for a long time, but when it comes to Darkthrone it is impossible not to look at a new album from a Black Metal perspective. The album opens with "Caravan of Broken Ghosts" and to be honest, the opening of the track, the tones and the first riffs are "wonder if, is this Black Metal?" Although it immediately brings the question to mind, unfortunately the answer is not as expected in the sequel of the album. While the song's acoustic intro reminds me of Bathory's Viking Metal era, hope is quickly fading, but that doesn't mean the song is bad. As in the previous album, "Astral Fortress" has a lot of good riffs, if we take them one by one. Catchy, very good Darkthrone style old school Rock. We can evaluate the musical value of each riff on the album, one by one coming from the depths of Rock and Metal music history, and praise it for hours; but the most memorable examples of such riffs and songs have already been written. Maybe one day this album will take its place among the classics; but today "Astral Fortress" is just a Darkthrone album.
As we have long been accustomed to, the duo stay away from high speed and aggressive stance. The quick episodes on the album do not exceed five fingers on a hand. "Caravan of Broken Ghosts", "Kevorkian Times" and "Eon 2". A good example of this type of section. The "proto-doom metal" that carries the Black Sabath spirit is spread throughout the album and "Stalagmite Necklace" is the best example of this. Songs like "Impeccable Caverns of Satan", "The Sea Beneath the Seas of the Sea", "Kevorkian Times" and "Kolbotn, West of the Vast Forests" seem to have been written in a mystical setting where the spirit of Celtic Frost roams. The Tom Gabriel Warrior resemblance in Nocturno Culto's vocals is disappointing. I think so because Nocturno has a unique style since the first album. Hearing the influence of another vocalist heavily in the tone of a person who has pioneered many issues in Black Metal after years made me deeply unhappy.
Elements such as the analog Mellotron and synthesizer used in the recordings pushed the band's music from the 70s to a progressive rock style. There is nothing extreme metal in this album other than death metal touches at the end of "Caravan of Broken Ghosts" or in the first half of "Kevorkian Times". "Caravan of Broken Ghosts" is the best song of the album in my opinion. Fenriz and Nocturno Culto are now far away from the production understanding of the 90s, if you still expect such music from them, it will only upset you. On the other side, it is obvious that the duo enjoyed a lot while playing the tracks they produced, especially in the last three albums. These albums are not a Black Metal album; but when the time comes, I think that the new generation will inspire and contribute to the accumulation and production of Black Metal.

Norveç ve Dünya Black Metalinin en önemli gruplarından biri Dark Throne 20. stüdyo albümünü 28 Ekim’de piyasaya sürdü. İlk albüm “Soulside Journey”i 1991 yılında yayınlandığında efsanesi olarak görüldüğü türde bir albüm üretmemiş olsalar da Dark Throne ikinci albümleri “A Blaze in the Northern Sky” ile birlikte bu türün en büyük isimlerinden biri oldu. Öyle ki Norwegian Black Metal dediğinde akıllara gelen ilk isimdir. Grubun metal sahnesine adım attığı dönemlerde aktif olan bir çok grup günümüzde aktif değil, bu açıdan baktığımızda Dark Throne’un hala üretiyor olması elbette ki harika; fakat grubun die hard fanlarının her bir ürünle özellikle “The Cult Is Alive” albümünden bu yana acı çektikleride bir gerçek.
Darkthrone, "Old Star", "Eternal Hails......" çizgisinde ilerlemeye devam ediyor. Öncelikle söylemeliyimki, bu kritikte şarkıları zaman zaman nagatif yönde eleştirmem şarkıların kötü olduğu anlamına gelmez. Her ne kadar Darkthrone "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" gibi bir albümü uzun süredir üretmese de, refleks olarak yeni bir albüme Black Metal perspektifinden bakmamak mümkün değil. Albüm "Caravan of Broken Ghosts" ile açılıyor ve dürüst olmak gerekirse, parçanın girişi, tonlar ve ilk riffler "Acaba, bu Black Metal mı?" sorusunu hemen akla düşürse de, ne yazık ki albümün devamında cevap beklendiği gibi değil. Parçanın akustik girişi, Bathory'nin Viking Metal dönemini hatırlatsa da umutlar hızla tükeniyor, fakat bu şarkının kötü olduğu anlamına gelmez. "Astral Fortress"te bir önceki albümde olduğu gibi, tek tek ele alırsak bir çok iyi riff var. Akılda kalıcı, çok iyi Darkthrone tarzı old school Rock. Albümdeki her bir riffin müzikal değerini tek tek, Rock ve Metal müzik tarihinin sayfalarının derinliklerinden gelerek değerlendirebilir ve saatlerce övebiliriz; ama bu tarz riffler ve şarkıların en unutulmaz örnekleri zaten yazıldı. Belki bu albümde bir gün klasikler arasında yerini alır; ama bu gün "Astral Fortress" sadece bir Darkthrone albümü.
Uzun zamandır alışık olduğumuz üzere, ikili yüksek hızdan ve agresif tutumdan uzak duruyorlar. Albümdeki hızlı bölümler bir elin beş parmağını geçmiyor. "Caravan of Broken Ghosts", "Kevorkian Times" ve "Eon 2". bu tarz bölümlere iyi örnek. Fenriz ve Nocturno Culto artık 90lı yılların üretim anlayışının çok uzağındalar, hala onlardan böyle bir müzik beklerseniz bu yalnızca sizi üzer. Diğer yandan özellikle son üç albümde ilerledikleri yönde ürettikleri parçaları çalarken ikilinin oldukça zevk aldığı aşikar. Bu albümler bir Black Metal albümü değil; ama zamanı geldiğinde yeni gelen kuşağın Black Metal birikimine ve üretimlerine ilham kaynağı olacağını ve katkı sağlayacağını düşünüyorum.
