Total Thrash: The Teutonic Story is a documentary made by Daniel Hofmann. As he stated, it was the result of a long effort from fans for the fans and it was finally presented to those who have been looking forward to watching this documentary for a long time in Essen Lichtburg/Germany, on May 31, 2022. All the seats of the venue, which can host 1250 people, were sold out weeks ago, although I was not there personally, according to the stories, the participants were quite excited and after the gong that announced the start of the documentary and they after that took their places with their beers.
The documentary is 107 minutes long in total and consists of three parts. If I have to make a short introduction, it's a great work that locks people on the screen every moment.
The documentary begins with an introduction that illustrates how Thrash Metal emerged in Germany in the early 1980s. Heroes like Sabina Classen (Holy Moses), Marcel Schirmer-Schmier (Destruction), Tom Angelripper (Sodom), Gerre-Andreas Fritz Johannes Geremia (Tankard), Ventor-Jürgen Reil (Kreator) tell their stories independently of a voice-over. We get the chance to see where the idea to start music and form the band came from, the places where the first photo shoots were made, dozens of old photographs and concert recordings. This rich visuality reveals the story of 40 years ago. My first impression was that nothing much has changed in the metal scene since years, only the quality of the cameras has improved. On my own, I find this good. Metal is a shelter where we still feel comfortable and safe in a world that is on a shitty road for change.
The above-mentioned heroes tell about their funny and exciting memories. When you decide to watch this documentary, I recommend that you get acquainted with the people who still have an important place in German thrash metal or about the important bands of the period; because the story is told not according to the bands, but according to the periodic order of the period, the people are constantly changing on the screen and the shield that indicate who they are every time do not appear on the screen every time. If you do not know these people, you may find it difficult to follow the story. Especially the DDR section is quite interesting. It is exciting that music like Thrash Metal can be produced in such an oppressively strict regime, that the bands have solidarity among each other and create a stage that can compete with their counterparts in West Germany.
The second episode is a little short compared to the others and this episode is about the 90s in general. The efforts of Thrash Metal bands to maintain their popularity in the face of a style like Grunge that came to the fore in the 90s, The efforts of some bands to somehow keep up with this change, the bands that oppose this change, the album release difficulties that bands that we see as legends today, such as Sodom, Kreator's notorious There is talk about topics such as the "Endorama" album. The thing that everyone agrees on is "The 90s were crap"
In the third part, we approach the present day. Especially the episodes in which producer Hoffmann accompanies Sodom and Traitor bands are quite good. A very good atmosphere was created with concert recordings and what happened behind the sxqcenes. As a viewer, it is impossible stop to compare the stage performances in this episode from past to present. Many things that have been tried and tried in the past are being done today, the only difference is that it is done with better technology. In addition to their old bands that came together after the 2000s, we see bands that have a few albums and can be seen as new according to them on the screen. I did not see any conflict between these two generations. Although it is very difficult for new bands to stand out or to find something new that will attract the attention of the Metal fans, their excitement does not decrease.
This documentary is Hoffmann's first production. The team working on the working of this documentary film does not have a Hollywood or Netflix quality. But if the subject is Thrash Metal history, does it interest fans like us? I do not think so. Problems such as slips of the tongue, endless sentences, and low voices of some band members, which will disturb the German fans who will watch this documentary, may disturb some fans; But if you are not a German and you will watch it with English subtitles, these problems will not tire you much.
I wish the first episode was longer, while watching it I thought "How quickly it finished". As someone who did not live in that period and loves to watch documentaries, it would be better for me to keep the 80s period longer. The fact that most of the guests who participated in the documentary clustered in the third episode creates some difficulty in terms of following the subject. After all, there are 143 people speaking for this documentary, it is very difficult to squeeze so many people into a certain period of time, some of them only speak for a few seconds, which I think is sad. Because I am sure that these very short-speaking people had many important things to tell. I think the ideal would be to make this documentary in a few episodes or to reduce the number of participants. Another negative point is that there are only 7 women among the participants in the documentary.
After all, such a film had to be made, and I congratulate Hoffmann for his courage and hard work. The documentary is not available on online platforms these days, and I don't know when it can be watched online. The only current option is to buy the DVD or Blu Ray versions. Of course, I did the same, and I have no regrets, I am very happy to have this work in my archive. I would definitely recommend it to Thrash fans of course to watch it.

Bu zengin görsellik 40 yıl öncesine ait olan hikayeyi önümüze seriyor. Edindiğim ilk intiba dünden bu güne metal sahnesinde pek bir şeyin değişmediği, sadece kameraların çekim kalitesi gelişmiş. Kendi adıma bunu iyi buluyorum, değişim adıan boktan bir yolda seyreden Dünyada Metal, kendimizi hala rahat ve güvenilir hissettiğimzi bir sığınak.

Üçüncü bölümde günümüze yaklaşıyoruz. Özellikle Sodom ve ona göre daha genç bir grup olan Traitor gruplarına yapımcı Hoffmann'ın eşlik ettiği bölümler oldukça iyi. Konser kayıtları, sahne arkasında yaşananlar ile oldukça iyi bir atmosfer yaratılmış. Bir izleyici olarka yine bu bölümde sahne performanslarını geçmişten bu güne karşılaştırmak elde değil. Geçmişte yapılmış denenmiş bir çok şey bu günde yapılıyor, arada ki tek fark daha iyi teknoloji ile yapılıyor olması. 2000lerden sonra yeniden bir araya gelen eski gruplarının yanında bir kaç albüme sahip, onlara göre yeni gibi görülebilecek grupları ekranda görüyoruz. Bu iki kuşak arasında bir çatışma görmedim. Yeni gruplar için ön plana çıkmak yada dinleyicinin dikkatini çekecek yeni bir şeyler bulmak oldukça zor olsada heycanlarından eksilme yok.
Bu belgesel Hoffmann'ın ilk yapımı. Bu belgesel filmin hazırlanışında çalışan kadroda bir Holywood ya da Netflix kalitesi yok. Ama konu Thrash Metal tarihi ise bizim gibi fanları bu ilgilendirir mi? Hiç sanmıyorum. Bu belgeseli izleyecek olan Alman fanları rahatsız edecek dil sürçmeleri, sonu gelmeyen cümeler, bazı grup elemanlarının seslerinin düşük kalması gibi sorunlar belki bazı fanları rahatsız edebilir; ama bir Alman değilseniz ve bunu İngilizce alt yazı seçeneği ile izleyeceğiniz için bu sorunlar sizi pek yormayacaktır.
ilk bölümün daha uzun olmasını dilerdim, izlerken "Ne çabuk geçti" diye düşündüm. O dönemi yaşamamış ve belgesel izlemeyi çok seven biri olarak 80ler döneminin daha uzun tutulması şahsi görüşüm olarak daha iyi olurdu. Belgesele katılan konuklarının çoğunun üçüncü bölüme yığılmış olması konuyu takip etme açısından biraz zorluk yaratıyor. Sonuçta bu belgesel için konuşan 147 kişi var, bu kadar insanı belli bir süreye sıkıştırmak çok zor, zaten bazıları sadece bir kaç saniye konuşuyor ve bu bence üzücü. Çünkü eminim ki bu çok kısa konuşan kişilerin de anlatacağı bir çok önemli şey vardı. İdeal olan bence ya bu belgeseli bir kaç bölüm halinde yapmak yada katılımcı sayısını azaltmaktı. Bir diğer negatif noktada da, belgesele katılanlar arasında sadece 7 kadın olması.
