MORBID ANGEL Altars Of Madness Review
There are albums that pull you into the extreme metal world when every metalhead first catches this virus. Of course, our aim in this blog is to write current albums; but it is important to write some important albums of Extreme Metal. This album will pull you in as soon as you hear the riff that still sounds ominous at the beginning of 'Immortal Rites'. Even though this album has a low-budget production, I think the recording engineering is very good, it sounds raw and original.. True evil!
And I think the biggest factor that transmits this malice to the fans is the vocal performance. There have been many vocal changes in the band's career and I think David Vincent was the best of these vocalists. His performance on this album is splendid, he doesn't have a deep growl, it's more something that I would call 'A tortured scream from an ancient ghoul' and this is exactly what he wanted, I'm sure of it. It is even so good at some points that it can scare you; His brutal performance on a heavy riff saying "The Devil is waiting for you in the fire of hell" is really good. The lyrics are not so surprising on this album, we hear the first examples of the style we have seen in many extreme metal bands of the late 80's early 90's, pure evil and a chorus in Ancient Sumerian language definitely helps. You will surely find words like 'Satan’', 'death' and 'Darkness' in the booklet.
One of the most striking details in this album is the extremely technical and extraordinary performance of each member. We don't hear the Bass clearly except for the tiny solo in 'Suffocation', probably because David Bass-Vocal performed together. We can talk for hours about guitar riffs, Trey Azagthoth's amazing performance is a harbinger of his going to be one of the important names in Death Metal history. We hear a guitar solo in every song; but these are not very catchy, they are the original riffs engraved on the brain convolutions on this album. And Pete Sandoval.. A musician who has always performed ahead of his time. I'm sure he's an inspiration to many good drummers today, the breathtaking Blast beat performance, the machine gun-like attacks that tire you out while listening. I wonder how the Earache Records guys reacted when they heard this album for the first time.
We could talk for hours about the memorable details of the album; but there are details that many Death Metal fans do not like in this album and that you can hear in every conversation about it. You can hear negative reviews like except the hymns in 'Chapel of Ghouls', the creepy horror sounds in 'Immortal Rites', some melodic riffs in 'Visions from the Dark Side', as the songs sound alike. I think this kind of criticism is totally unfair for this album. It's a record that should definitely be in your archive, if you're lucky, get the first edition vinyl version, you don't need any other version.
Immortal Rites, Maze of Torment and Damnation are my favorite songs on the album. In summary, Altars of Madness is a great Old School Death Metal classic. Spending time on this album will never make you regret it. 10/9
